Introduction
Responsible innovation is the practice of developing and implementing innovations in ways that are ethical, sustainable, inclusive and aligned with societal needs. It recognises that innovation creates consequences beyond commercial success and asks innovators to consider the wider impact of their decisions.
Historically, many innovations generated significant benefits while also creating unintended harmful consequences. Responsible innovation seeks to reduce these risks by encouraging anticipation, reflection, stakeholder engagement and accountability.
Within the Execute stage of the 5E Design Thinking Framework, responsible innovation helps organisations ensure implementation decisions contribute positively to people, organisations, communities and the environment.
