See the whole system

Systems thinking examines the relationships between elements rather than treating each component in isolation. A system is more than the sum of its parts because interaction changes behaviour and outcomes.

Looking for patterns, interdependencies and structure creates a more complete account of complex social, economic and environmental challenges.

Understand feedback and emergence

Feedback occurs when the output of behaviour becomes an input to the same system. Reinforcing loops amplify change, while balancing loops counteract or stabilise it.

Emergence describes properties that arise through interaction and cannot be predicted from individual components alone. These patterns become visible only when the system is examined as a whole.

Find leverage for change

Systems thinking can illuminate challenges such as climate change by connecting human activity, atmosphere, oceans, land, economics and society. It can also reveal how customers, employees, suppliers and investors influence organisational outcomes.

Understanding these relationships helps teams address root causes, identify leverage points and develop interventions that are more sustainable and resilient over time.
