Designerly Thinking

A way of thinking that combines imagination, inquiry, synthesis and judgement to explore and shape possible responses.

01

Think beyond conventional patterns

Creative designerly thinking is a mental process for generating new and original ideas, often in response to a problem or opportunity. It asks people to move beyond established thinking patterns and explore unconventional possibilities.

This capability is useful across design, art, business and technology. It strengthens the ability to imagine alternatives, discover connections and develop innovative responses to personal and professional challenges.

02

Expand before narrowing

Designerly thinking uses divergence to create a wide range of possibilities rather than committing immediately to one answer. Flexibility makes it possible to view a challenge from several perspectives and adapt as new information emerges.

Curiosity, imagination and playfulness encourage experimentation. Synthesis then combines existing ideas and concepts in novel ways, creating responses that are more than the sum of their parts.

03

Balance creativity with judgement

Designerly thinking is not creativity without discipline. Critical designerly thinking analyses information and arguments systematically, using logic, evidence and reason to examine the value of an idea.

The creative and critical modes work together. Exploration opens the field of possibility; evaluation helps a team recognise which ideas deserve development, what assumptions require testing and how an emerging response can be improved.

Put the method to work

Practise designerly thinking

01

Diverge

Generate a wide range of possible ideas before limiting the direction.

02

Shift perspective

Examine the challenge through different people, contexts and frames.

03

Stay curious

Ask questions and investigate possibilities that are unfamiliar or uncertain.

04

Use imagination

Envision alternatives that are not constrained by the current situation.

05

Experiment playfully

Try ideas, make unexpected combinations and suspend premature judgement.

06

Synthesise

Bring existing concepts together in new ways to create a coherent response.

07

Evaluate

Use evidence and reason to test the strength, relevance and practicality of an idea.

Why it matters

What designerly thinking strengthens

Creative range

Expand the number and variety of possibilities available to a team.

Better framing

See challenges from different perspectives and recognise alternative ways forward.

Integrated judgement

Balance imagination with analysis so originality remains connected to purpose.

Innovative action

Translate emerging ideas into responses that can be tested, refined and applied.
