Social Impact Assessment

A process used to evaluate how a project, product, service or initiative may affect individuals, communities and society.

01

Innovation affects people in different ways

Every innovation creates consequences that extend beyond immediate users. While some impacts are intended and beneficial, others may create unexpected challenges for individuals, communities or particular stakeholder groups.

Social Impact Assessment helps organisations understand how people experience change. It examines how initiatives influence wellbeing, inclusion, employment, participation, access to services, quality of life and community outcomes.

By broadening the focus beyond organisational objectives, teams gain a deeper understanding of how their actions affect the people they ultimately serve. This creates opportunities to maximise positive outcomes while identifying areas where additional support or mitigation may be required.

02

Different stakeholders experience different outcomes

The benefits and challenges created by an initiative are rarely distributed equally. Some groups may experience significant advantages, while others may face barriers, risks or unintended consequences.

Social Impact Assessment encourages organisations to engage a diverse range of stakeholders and consider multiple perspectives. This helps reveal differences in experience that might otherwise remain hidden and creates a more balanced understanding of impact.

Considering these perspectives supports more equitable decision-making and helps ensure that innovation creates value for a broad range of people rather than only a select few.

03

Understanding impact supports better decisions

When organisations understand how their actions affect people and communities, they are in a stronger position to make responsible decisions. Social Impact Assessment provides evidence that can inform planning, implementation, resource allocation and continuous improvement.

The process also strengthens accountability by demonstrating a commitment to monitoring outcomes and responding to stakeholder needs. Over time, this helps organisations create more meaningful and sustainable forms of value.

Social impact is not simply something to measure after implementation. It is something that should actively shape decisions throughout the innovation process.

Put the method to work

Put Social Impact Assessment into practice

01

Identify affected stakeholders

Determine who may experience positive or negative impacts as a result of the initiative.

02

Define anticipated social outcomes

Clarify the changes, benefits or challenges that may emerge for individuals and communities.

03

Gather evidence

Use interviews, surveys, workshops, observations and other methods to understand stakeholder experiences.

04

Evaluate and respond

Review findings, identify improvement opportunities and adjust plans where necessary.

Why it matters

What Social Impact Assessment makes possible

Creates a deeper understanding of outcomes

The process helps organisations move beyond outputs and understand how their initiatives influence people's lives and experiences.

Supports more inclusive decision-making

Considering diverse stakeholder perspectives leads to decisions that are more equitable and responsive to community needs.

Reveals unintended consequences

Assessment can uncover impacts that may not have been anticipated during design or implementation.

Strengthens accountability

Evidence about social outcomes helps organisations demonstrate responsibility and transparency.
