A student might say they are highly organised, yet regularly submit work at the last minute. A customer may claim price is the primary factor influencing purchases, yet consistently choose premium products. An employee might describe a process as effective while simultaneously creating workarounds to avoid using it.

This is why observation is one of the most valuable capabilities available to innovators.

Observation allows us to move beyond assumptions, opinions and self-reports to understand behaviour as it occurs in real contexts. It helps reveal hidden needs, unmet opportunities, environmental influences and patterns that may not emerge through interviews or surveys alone.

Within the Engage stage of the 5E Design Thinking Framework, observation helps innovators develop empathy and understanding before defining problems or generating solutions.

The goal is not simply to watch people.

The goal is to understand them.
