Accountability and Transparency

A commitment to making decisions, actions, processes and outcomes visible, understandable and open to review.

01

Accountability creates responsibility

Accountability exists when individuals and organisations accept responsibility for their actions and decisions. It involves being prepared to explain choices, justify actions and respond to outcomes.

Clear accountability encourages better decision-making because people understand their roles, responsibilities and obligations. It also reduces uncertainty by clarifying who is responsible for particular actions and outcomes.

Strong accountability systems support trust, governance and organisational performance.

02

Transparency supports trust

Transparency involves sharing information openly and making processes, decisions and outcomes visible to others. It enables stakeholders to understand how decisions were made, what evidence was considered and how outcomes are being monitored.

When transparency is absent, people may question motives, assumptions or intentions. Conversely, transparent communication helps build confidence and improve stakeholder relationships.

Transparency does not require sharing everything. Rather, it involves providing sufficient information to support understanding, accountability and informed engagement.

03

Openness strengthens learning and improvement

Accountability and transparency are not only governance mechanisms. They also support learning. When outcomes, decisions and performance are openly reviewed, organisations create opportunities to identify lessons, discuss challenges and improve future practices.

This openness encourages reflection, evaluation and continuous improvement. It also helps organisations respond more effectively when mistakes occur by focusing attention on learning rather than avoidance.

As a result, accountability and transparency contribute to both organisational effectiveness and stakeholder trust.
