Narrow with purpose

Convergent thinking brings information together and applies logical steps to identify the best available answer. It is focused, structured, analytical and goal-oriented.

The method is particularly useful when a problem is well defined and there are clear criteria for comparing possible responses.

Match the mode to the problem

Divergent thinking is valuable when a challenge is ambiguous and does not have an obvious right answer. Convergent thinking is useful when facts, constraints and evaluation criteria can guide selection.

Convergence relies on existing knowledge and evidence, helping teams prioritise accuracy, efficiency and fit with the objective.

Combine expansion and focus

Divergent and convergent thinking are not mutually exclusive. Effective problem solvers move between the two: opening the field, then comparing, combining and selecting.

Used together, these modes connect creativity with judgement so an original idea can also become a considered and workable response.
