Reflective Practice

A deliberate process of examining experiences, decisions and actions in order to develop deeper understanding and improve future performance.

01

Experience alone does not guarantee learning

People encounter experiences every day, but valuable learning only occurs when those experiences are examined and understood. Reflective practice encourages individuals and teams to pause, think critically and consider what can be learned from events and outcomes.

Rather than moving directly from one activity to the next, reflection creates space to explore successes, challenges, assumptions and decisions. This deeper understanding helps transform experiences into meaningful learning.

Reflection is therefore not simply about looking back. It is about improving future action.

02

Reflection encourages critical thinking

Reflective practice helps people analyse why particular outcomes occurred and how different choices may have influenced results. By exploring multiple perspectives, individuals can identify hidden assumptions, unconscious biases and overlooked opportunities.

This process supports stronger judgement and more informed decision-making. It encourages curiosity and helps people become more aware of how their actions contribute to outcomes.

Over time, reflective practice strengthens both personal and professional capabilities.

03

Reflection supports continuous improvement

When reflection becomes a regular habit, learning becomes more intentional and sustainable. Teams gain a deeper understanding of their strengths and challenges, making it easier to identify meaningful opportunities for improvement.

Reflection also helps reinforce successful practices while reducing the likelihood of repeating mistakes. This ongoing cycle of experience, reflection and adaptation creates a powerful foundation for growth and development.

Put the method to work

Put Reflective Practice into practice

01

Review the experience

Consider what happened and identify significant events or outcomes.

02

Explore contributing factors

Examine decisions, assumptions, actions and circumstances that influenced results.

03

Identify lessons and insights

Determine what has been learned and what should be retained or changed.

04

Apply learning going forward

Use reflection to inform future decisions, behaviours and improvement efforts.

Why it matters

What Reflective Practice makes possible

Deepens understanding

Reflection helps individuals and teams gain richer insights into experiences and outcomes.

Improves decision-making

Greater awareness of assumptions and influences supports stronger judgement.

Supports professional growth

Reflection helps people develop new skills, perspectives and capabilities.

Encourages continuous learning

Regular reflection creates ongoing opportunities for development and improvement.
