Prototype Pathways

A practical guide to selecting prototype forms that match the idea, question, audience and available resources.

Prototype the uncertainty

Different questions require different representations. A paper sketch may be sufficient for layout, a storyboard for sequence, a role-play for service behaviour and a model for physical form.

The pathway should begin with what remains uncertain, not with the tool or technology the team prefers to use.

Move from simple to specific

Early prototypes should remain quick and changeable. As evidence grows, the team can add fidelity, resolution and realism where these support more precise testing.

This progression prevents effort from becoming attached to details before the central proposition has been validated.

Combine forms when necessary

Complex ideas often span physical objects, digital touchpoints, human interaction and operational processes. One prototype may not represent every dimension.

A pathway can combine sketches, models, scenarios, interface simulations and system maps to test connected questions deliberately.
