The 5E Design Thinking Framework is more than a sequence of stages. It is a visual representation of how understanding develops, how decisions are informed and how innovation progresses through continuous learning. Many process models show what happens at each stage. While these activities matter, innovation is rarely experienced as a simple progression from one step to the next. The 5E Design Thinking Framework visualises something deeper: the movement of information, insights, assumptions, evidence and actions across an innovation journey that is dynamic, interconnected and constantly evolving.

Seeing beyond the stages

A living system of inquiry and action.

Engage, Evaluate, Explore, Expand and Execute provide structure, but the framework is not intended to be interpreted as a rigid sequence. Its real value lies in understanding how each stage influences every other stage. Learning gathered through Engage affects Evaluate. Evaluation influences Explore. Exploration shapes Expand. Expansion informs Execute. Execution generates new learning that often returns practitioners to earlier stages. The framework therefore represents a living system of inquiry, reflection, experimentation and action.

Information flows

Information is constantly moving.

Innovation requires teams to collect, interpret, challenge and apply information in meaningful ways. Information enters the process through observation, conversations, research and experience. As it moves through the framework, information is transformed into insights, opportunities, possibilities, evidence, decisions and action. The visual connections remind practitioners that information never remains static and that every stage contributes to the continual development of understanding.

Learning flows

Innovation progresses by increasing understanding.

Teams begin with incomplete understanding. As they engage with stakeholders, evaluate findings, explore alternatives and expand ideas through experimentation, their knowledge evolves. This evolution is one of the framework’s most important concepts. Innovation is not simply about generating solutions. Each activity produces new knowledge that influences future decisions, making learning the primary mechanism through which innovation progresses.

Feedback loops

Returning is a sign of learning, not failure.

New evidence frequently challenges assumptions, unexpected discoveries reveal opportunities and implementation exposes realities that could not have been predicted earlier. Practitioners therefore revisit previous stages. A prototype may reveal the need for further stakeholder engagement. A pilot may require renewed exploration. An evaluation may challenge the original understanding of the problem. These feedback loops are not signs of failure. They represent the adaptive nature of effective innovation.

Productive tensions

Innovation develops between competing priorities.

Innovation is creative, but it is also a process of balancing competing priorities. These tensions cannot be eliminated, nor should they be. Innovation frequently emerges because teams engage thoughtfully with competing perspectives rather than attempting to remove them.

Divergence and convergence

Opening possibilities and focusing decisions.

Across the framework, moments of expansion and focus continually occur. Practitioners open their thinking by seeking perspectives, challenging assumptions and generating possibilities. At other times, they narrow their attention, prioritise options, make decisions and commit resources. This movement between divergence and convergence occurs repeatedly rather than appearing only once. Too much divergence creates confusion, while too much convergence can limit creativity. Effective innovation involves finding balance between the two.

Connections rather than handoffs

Every stage remains connected.

Traditional process diagrams can be interpreted as a series of handoffs in which one stage finishes and the next begins. The 5E Design Thinking Framework encourages a different perspective. Insights generated during Engage continue influencing decisions in Execute. Evidence collected during Expand may reshape Explore. Execution outcomes can trigger entirely new cycles of engagement and evaluation. The framework emphasises continuity rather than transition: a connected ecosystem in which activities remain linked through shared understanding.

The return journey

Execution is not an endpoint.

Execution creates new experiences, evidence, opportunities and questions. Implementation often generates the next cycle of innovation. Exploration can reveal gaps requiring renewed engagement. Evaluation may challenge assumptions and prompt further investigation. Expansion may uncover possibilities that inspire new directions. Innovation is rarely completed. It evolves through ongoing cycles of learning, reflection and action.

Sense-making

A way to navigate complexity.

Complex challenges involve multiple stakeholders, competing priorities, uncertainty and continuous change. The visual language provides a way to navigate this complexity by revealing how knowledge develops and moves throughout the innovation process. Rather than asking practitioners to follow a sequence of steps, it encourages them to recognise patterns, relationships and interactions. In doing so, the 5E Design Thinking Framework becomes a sense-making model as well as a process model.

The diagrams are not merely illustrations of a process. They represent how people learn, how organisations make decisions and how innovation emerges through the interaction of understanding, evidence and action. Every flow, connection, loop and tension reminds practitioners that innovation is not linear. It is an evolving system shaped by people, context, learning and choice. The purpose of the visual language is simple: to make visible the movement of understanding. When people can see how insights, evidence and decisions travel across the innovation journey, they become better equipped to navigate complexity, collaborate effectively and create meaningful change.
