Usability Testing

A method used to evaluate how easily people can use a product, service, system or interface to achieve their goals effectively, efficiently and with satisfaction.

01

Focus on how people interact with a solution

Usability testing examines the experience of using a product or service. While a solution may be technically functional, it may still create frustration, confusion or unnecessary effort for users. Usability testing helps teams understand whether people can successfully complete tasks and navigate experiences without difficulty.

Rather than evaluating what designers intended, usability testing evaluates what users experience. It highlights gaps between design assumptions and actual behaviour, revealing where improvements may be required. Even small usability issues can significantly affect satisfaction, efficiency and adoption.

By observing how users interact with a solution, teams gain valuable evidence about the clarity, accessibility and effectiveness of the overall experience.

02

Identify friction and barriers

People often experience challenges that project teams overlook because they are already familiar with the solution. Usability testing helps uncover these barriers by placing solutions into the hands of real users and observing their interactions.

Common issues include unclear instructions, confusing navigation, unnecessary complexity, inconsistent design and accessibility challenges. These obstacles can reduce user confidence and lead to poor outcomes.

Identifying friction early allows teams to address problems before implementation or launch. Reducing effort and improving clarity often creates a significantly better experience for users while increasing the effectiveness of the solution.

03

Improve the overall user experience

Usability testing is not simply about finding problems. It is also about understanding how experiences can become more intuitive, efficient and meaningful.

Insights gathered through testing help organisations prioritise improvements and make informed design decisions. This iterative approach encourages continuous refinement based on evidence rather than opinion.

The result is a solution that better aligns with user needs, supports successful task completion and provides a more satisfying overall experience.

Put the method to work

Put Usability Testing into practice

01

Define key user tasks

Identify the most important activities users need to complete within the solution. Focus on tasks that are central to achieving the intended outcomes.

02

Recruit representative users

Select participants who reflect the intended audience and user groups. Their experiences should closely resemble those of future users.

03

Observe interactions and challenges

Ask participants to complete realistic tasks while observing their behaviour, questions, frustrations and decision-making processes.

04

Prioritise and implement improvements

Review findings, identify recurring usability issues and implement changes that improve the user experience.

Why it matters

What Usability Testing makes possible

Improves ease of use

Usability testing helps identify areas where users experience confusion, unnecessary effort or frustration. Improvements can make products and services easier to understand, navigate and use.

Enhances user satisfaction

People are more likely to have positive experiences when solutions are intuitive and efficient. Improved usability often leads to higher satisfaction and stronger engagement.

Supports accessibility

Testing can reveal barriers that affect different groups of users, helping teams create more inclusive and accessible solutions.

Increases adoption and success

When people can easily achieve their goals, they are more likely to embrace and continue using a product, service or system.
