Introduction

It begins with understanding.

Before products are designed, services are improved or strategies are developed, effective innovators invest time in research. They seek to understand people, contexts, behaviours, systems, motivations and opportunities. They recognise that assumptions are unreliable and that evidence provides a stronger foundation for decision-making.

Within the 5E Design Thinking Framework, research plays a particularly important role during the Engage and Evaluate stages. It helps innovators understand the people they serve, the challenges they face and the opportunities that may exist.

Research does not eliminate uncertainty.

It helps us navigate uncertainty more effectively.

The purpose of design research is not simply to gather information.
