The central idea

The 5E Design Thinking Framework provides a structured yet flexible approach to innovation, problem solving and value creation. While it consists of five distinct stages, it is best understood as an interconnected system where knowledge, insights, ideas and evidence continuously flow between activities. Each stage serves a unique purpose while contributing to the broader process of understanding people, generating opportunities, reducing uncertainty and creating meaningful outcomes.

Stage 01 · Engage

Understanding people and context.

Innovation begins with people. Engage focuses on developing a deep understanding of stakeholders, users, customers, communities and the environments in which they operate. Rather than relying on assumptions, practitioners connect directly with those affected by the challenge through observation, discussion, immersion and inquiry. The goal is to uncover needs, motivations, behaviours, aspirations and frustrations that may not be immediately visible.

Stage 02 · Evaluate

Making sense of information.

Evaluation transforms information into insight. Evaluate involves analysing, organising and interpreting the information gathered during engagement activities. Teams seek patterns, themes, tensions and opportunities that deepen their understanding of the challenge. Evaluation often reveals that the original problem statement is incomplete and requires reframing. This stage creates clarity from complexity.

  • Typical tools · Affinity mapping, mind mapping, problem reframing, root cause analysis, SWOT analysis and PESTLE analysis.

Stage 03 · Explore

Imagining better possibilities.

Exploration focuses on what could be. Once opportunities have been identified, teams generate ideas, challenge assumptions and explore alternative futures. Creative thinking is encouraged, allowing potential solutions to emerge before they are evaluated. The emphasis is on possibility rather than limitation. This stage expands the solution space and encourages innovation beyond incremental improvement.

Stage 04 · Expand

Learning through evidence.

Expansion converts assumptions into evidence. Ideas become tangible through prototypes, mock-ups, pilots and simulations. Rather than investing heavily in untested concepts, teams create opportunities for rapid learning by putting ideas in front of stakeholders and gathering feedback. The focus is not proving an idea is right. The focus is learning.

Stage 05 · Execute

Turning learning into impact.

Execution transforms validated ideas into action. Solutions are implemented, embedded and evaluated within real-world contexts. Resources are allocated, plans are developed and change is managed to maximise value creation and impact. Execution generates new knowledge that often begins another cycle of innovation. Implementation is therefore viewed as both an end point and a new beginning.

Visual language

Understanding relationships, flow and tension.

Most innovation frameworks focus on activities. The 5E Design Thinking Framework focuses on relationships. Its visual language was deliberately designed to help people see how information, insights, decisions and evidence move throughout the innovation process. While the five stages provide structure, the real power of innovation often lies in the connections between them. Innovation does not occur because a team completes a stakeholder interview, creates a prototype or runs a workshop. Innovation occurs because knowledge gained from one activity influences decisions made elsewhere in the process.

Many organisational challenges involve balancing competing demands. Rather than avoiding these tensions, the 5E Design Thinking Framework encourages teams to engage with them deliberately. Innovation often emerges through successfully navigating competing priorities.

The 5E Design Thinking Framework does not seek to replace existing models. Instead, it builds upon established thinking while providing a contemporary interpretation that emphasises connection, flow, learning and action. Its contribution lies in helping people see not only the stages of innovation, but also the relationships that bind them together. By making knowledge flows, feedback loops and decision-making processes more visible, the framework supports a richer understanding of how innovation actually occurs in practice. Innovation is not simply a sequence of activities. It is a continuous flow of understanding, insight, evidence and action. This belief sits at the heart of the 5E Design Thinking Framework.
