Assumption Testing

A method used to evaluate whether important beliefs about users, markets, technologies or solutions are accurate and supported by evidence.

01

Make assumptions visible

Every project is built upon assumptions. Teams frequently make decisions based on beliefs about customer needs, market demand, stakeholder behaviour or organisational capabilities.

The challenge is that many assumptions remain hidden. Because they are rarely discussed or documented, they can influence decisions without being examined.

Assumption testing encourages teams to identify and surface these beliefs so they can be evaluated systematically. Making assumptions visible is often the first step toward reducing uncertainty and improving decision quality.

02

Focus on the most critical uncertainties

Not all assumptions carry equal risk. Some assumptions may have little impact if proven incorrect, while others could undermine an entire initiative.

Effective assumption testing prioritises the beliefs that have the greatest influence on success. These assumptions often relate to customer behaviour, value propositions, implementation feasibility or organisational readiness.

By identifying and testing high-risk assumptions first, teams can learn more quickly and avoid investing resources in ideas built on flawed foundations.

03

Learn before investing heavily

One of the primary benefits of assumption testing is its ability to generate learning at relatively low cost. Small experiments, interviews, prototypes and pilot activities can often provide valuable evidence before significant commitments are made.

This approach encourages informed decision-making and reduces the likelihood of pursuing solutions that lack viability, feasibility or desirability.

Assumption testing transforms uncertainty into actionable knowledge.

Put the method to work

Put Assumption Testing into practice

01

Identify key assumptions

Document the beliefs that underpin the solution, strategy or initiative.

02

Prioritise the highest-risk assumptions

Focus on assumptions that could have the greatest impact on success.

03

Design appropriate tests

Select methods capable of generating evidence related to each assumption.

04

Review and adapt

Use findings to strengthen, modify or reconsider the solution.

Why it matters

What Assumption Testing makes possible

Reduces uncertainty

Testing helps replace unsupported beliefs with reliable evidence.

Prevents costly mistakes

Organisations can identify flawed assumptions before major resources are committed.

Strengthens innovation

Better understanding leads to stronger concepts, solutions and implementation plans.

Supports evidence-based decisions

Evidence gathered through testing creates a stronger foundation for future action.
