Encouraging Creativity

The deliberate creation of conditions in which people can imagine, experiment, contribute ideas and develop original responses together.

01

Creativity is critical for innovation

Creativity is the ability to generate ideas, solutions or expressions that are both novel and valuable. It combines originality, imagination and the capacity to move beyond conventional boundaries.

It is not limited to the arts. Creativity contributes to science, technology, business and education by helping people notice unexpected connections, challenge established patterns and imagine possibilities that do not yet exist.

02

Support the creative process

Creative work often moves through preparation, incubation, illumination and verification. People gather information and explore perspectives, allow ideas time to develop, recognise emerging insights and then refine and test what has been imagined.

These activities do not always occur in a fixed order. Creativity is dynamic and iterative, requiring time for exploration as well as the discipline to evaluate whether an emerging idea is useful and feasible.

03

Make experimentation safe

Creativity depends on a willingness to take risks, challenge the status quo and continue after an attempt does not succeed. Trial and error produces evidence that can strengthen the next response.

It is also a collaborative capability. Diverse groups can share ideas, build on one another’s contributions and develop possibilities that an individual may not reach alone. Open communication, psychological safety and respect for different perspectives make this collective creativity possible.

Put the method to work

Create the conditions for creativity

01

Build a supportive culture

Create an environment in which people feel comfortable expressing unfinished ideas and different viewpoints.

02

Encourage brainstorming

Use structured or open exploration to generate possibilities before judging or narrowing them.

03

Value diversity

Bring different backgrounds, experiences and approaches into the creative process.

04

Provide time and resources

Allow space for thinking, experimentation, prototyping and purposeful reflection.

05

Develop a growth mindset

Treat difficulty, feedback and unsuccessful attempts as opportunities to learn.

06

Make failure safe

Encourage responsible risks so people can test ideas without fear of blame or embarrassment.

07

Invest in development

Help people strengthen their creative practice through training, workshops and continued experience.

Why it matters

What encouraged creativity makes possible

Original possibilities

Move beyond familiar answers and generate a broader range of potential responses.

Collective imagination

Combine diverse contributions to create ideas that are richer than individual thinking alone.

Adaptive capability

Respond to change and uncertainty with curiosity, flexibility and purposeful experimentation.

Continuous improvement

Use testing, feedback and iteration to turn early ideas into stronger outcomes.
