The central idea

The 5E Design Thinking Framework was developed during a period of significant change in business, technology and society. While established design thinking approaches have made important contributions to human-centred innovation, contemporary organisations face challenges that extend beyond desirability, viability and feasibility. Increasingly, innovators must also consider ethics, sustainability, social responsibility, governance, accessibility and long-term impact. At the same time, innovation practice itself has evolved. Learning, experimentation and adaptation are no longer viewed as activities that occur at isolated points in a project. They occur continuously. These observations led to two ideas that sit at the heart of the 5E Design Thinking Framework: responsible innovation and continuous prototyping. Together, they help ensure that innovation remains both purposeful and adaptive in a rapidly changing world.

Consequences and choices

Innovation carries responsibility.

Innovation is often associated with creativity, opportunity and growth. However, every innovation also creates consequences. New technologies influence behaviour. Products affect communities. Services shape experiences. Policies impact people and systems. Business decisions carry social, environmental and economic implications. Historically, many innovation frameworks have focused on helping teams create solutions that are desirable, viable and feasible. While these remain important considerations, they do not always address a critical question: Should this solution exist in the first place? The 5E Design Thinking Framework encourages individuals and organisations to move beyond asking whether something can be done, and to also consider whether it should be done.

A broader responsibility

From human-centred to human-responsible.

Human-centred design begins by understanding people’s needs, aspirations and challenges. The 5E Design Thinking Framework embraces this principle but extends it further. Innovation should not only respond to immediate stakeholder needs. It should also consider broader impacts on society, communities, organisations and future generations. By elevating these questions throughout the framework, responsible innovation becomes an ongoing consideration rather than a final review activity.

Contemporary expectations

ESG, CSR and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The increasing importance of Environmental, Social and Governance considerations, Corporate Social Responsibility and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals reflects a broader shift in how organisations define success. Organisations are increasingly expected to create value that extends beyond financial performance alone. These considerations are not treated as separate activities. They interact with every stage of the framework.

Responsibility across 5E

Responsibility belongs in every stage.

Responsible innovation is not a final checkpoint. It informs how people are engaged, evidence is evaluated, possibilities are explored, prototypes are tested and solutions are implemented.

  • Engage · Understanding people includes understanding communities, systems and broader societal contexts. Stakeholder engagement should seek diverse voices, including those who may be indirectly affected by decisions.
  • Evaluate · Analysis extends beyond identifying opportunities. It also involves evaluating risks, ethical implications, sustainability concerns and systemic impacts.
  • Explore · Idea generation should encourage consideration of multiple futures and multiple forms of value creation. The most attractive idea may not always be the most responsible one.
  • Expand · Prototypes and experiments provide opportunities to identify unintended consequences before large-scale implementation. Testing should include ethical, social and environmental considerations where appropriate.
  • Execute · Implementation should include mechanisms for monitoring impact, learning from outcomes and adapting solutions responsibly over time.

A fourth dimension

Beyond desirability, viability and feasibility.

The design thinking community has long used the concepts of desirability, viability and feasibility to evaluate opportunities. The 5E Design Thinking Framework fully supports these dimensions. However, contemporary challenges suggest the need for an additional consideration: responsibility. A solution may be desirable to users, viable for an organisation and feasible to implement, yet still create negative social, environmental or ethical consequences. The framework therefore encourages innovation teams to evaluate solutions through a broader lens that includes responsibility alongside desirability, viability and feasibility.

Learning throughout

Continuous prototyping.

A second principle underpinning the 5E Design Thinking Framework is the belief that prototyping should not be confined to a single stage of innovation. Many traditional representations of design thinking include a dedicated Prototype phase. While valuable, this can unintentionally create the impression that prototyping occurs only after ideas have been selected. In practice, innovators constantly make their thinking visible. The 5E Design Thinking Framework views prototyping as a behaviour rather than a stage. It is a mechanism for learning. It occurs throughout the innovation journey.

Making ideas visible

Prototyping as learning.

At its simplest, a prototype is anything that makes an idea visible, discussable or testable. A prototype does not need to be a physical model. Each representation provides an opportunity to learn. Prototyping helps transform assumptions into evidence and uncertainty into understanding.

  • A sketch, diagram or concept statement.
  • A conversation guide, storyboard or journey map.
  • A business model, pilot program or service simulation.
  • A policy draft or another provisional representation of an idea.

Prototyping across 5E

Every stage makes thinking testable.

Continuous prototyping allows practitioners to test questions, interpretations, opportunities, concepts and implementation choices throughout the innovation journey.

  • Engage · Practitioners prototype questions, interview guides, observation strategies and assumptions about stakeholder needs. The act of engagement itself becomes a form of exploration and learning.
  • Evaluate · Teams prototype interpretations. Problem statements, stakeholder maps and emerging insights are provisional representations that can be challenged, refined and improved.
  • Explore · Ideas, scenarios and opportunity spaces are continuously prototyped through discussion, visualisation and collaborative exploration. The objective is to make ideas visible and testable.
  • Expand · Traditional prototypes become increasingly tangible. Concepts develop into models, simulations, demonstrations and experiments that generate evidence.
  • Execute · Implementation itself becomes a form of prototyping. Pilot projects, staged rollouts and iterative deployment enable continued learning, adaptation and refinement.

Learning through visibility

If people can see it, they can learn from it.

If people can see it, discuss it and challenge it, they can learn from it. Making thinking visible accelerates learning. It enables stakeholders to contribute feedback, reveals assumptions, exposes risks and creates opportunities for improvement. Continuous prototyping therefore becomes one of the primary mechanisms through which innovation progresses.

Together, responsible innovation and continuous prototyping reinforce a broader view of innovation. Innovation is not simply about generating ideas, nor is it simply about implementing solutions. Innovation is a process of learning. It involves understanding people, evaluating evidence, exploring possibilities, expanding understanding and executing informed action. Responsible innovation ensures that learning considers social, environmental, ethical and organisational consequences. Continuous prototyping ensures that learning occurs throughout the journey rather than at isolated points.

The 5E Design Thinking Framework was developed to reflect the realities of modern innovation. Organisations today operate in environments characterised by complexity, uncertainty and increasing expectations of accountability and responsibility. Success depends not only on solving problems but on understanding the wider implications of the solutions being created. Ultimately, the goal is not simply to create innovative solutions. The goal is to create solutions that are meaningful, evidence-informed, responsible and capable of generating positive and lasting impact.
